CLIMARES in the Media: news about the center

Brazil has shown an increase in the frequency of extreme climatic and meteorological events in recent decades, especially in the last decade. All biomes and populations in the country have been affected, but populations located in vulnerable areas as well as indigenous communities have suffered the most. For example, disasters triggered by extreme rainfall were the cause of thousands of deaths that could have been avoided had society developed resilience in the face of the climate crisis. Thus, it has become urgent to prepare society to have the capacity for adaptation and, if necessary, transformation to acquire resilience against the impacts of the climate crisis. The RIDC CLIMARES has the mission of working on innovation for adaptation and resilience in the face of the climate crisis, disasters, and impacts on strategic sectors of Brazil such as food, energy, water, and the economy.

CLIMARES will serve as a center for excellence, collaboration, and innovative solutions, bringing together leading researchers, public policy makers, and industry experts to anticipate risks and implement robust resilience measures. To fulfill its mission, the Center proposes an interdisciplinary strategy based on action in 11 thematic axes that interact and complement each other: 1) Climate Change and Variability; 2) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management; 3) Energy Transition and Technology; 4) Food Security and Hunger Reduction; 5) Water Security and Adaptive Management; 6) Health Security and Pandemic Risk; 7) Education and Knowledge Dissemination; 8) Innovation in Climate Intervention; 9) Social Transformation in the face of Climate Change; 10) Economic Impacts Influenced by the Climate Crisis; and 11) Amazon: Technological Development and Sustainability.
